Danelectro Dan Echo DE-1 Modifications

The Danelectro Dan-Echo DE-1 is a delay/echo pedal designed and released by Danelectro in the 1990s. It’s gone through a few versions over those years – specifically three. The first and second versions utilized the PT2395 delay chip – the only difference being whether through-hole (first version) or SMD (second version) resistors and capacitors were used. The third, and I believe final, version threw away the PT2395 for a DSP approach. The modifications provided here apply only to the versions with the PT2395.

Mods for the Dan Echo

Buffer Mod

The Buffer Mod installs an input buffer, which is applied to the input signal regardless of whether the pedal is engaged or bypassed. Good for when you have all true bypass pedals and need to reclaim your signal before sending it out to the amp.

Doubler Mod

Introducing the Doubler Mod for the Dan-Electro Dan-Echo! The Doubler Mod installs a switch that, in general, shifts the range of the “Speed” control downward. When the repeats control is at zero, allowing only one repeat, this mod allows you to reach a doubling effect when switched to the Slow mode (hence “Doubler” Mod).

If you’d like to DIY, I’ve written a small write-up on applying the Doubler Mod.

Infinite Repeats Mod

The Infinite Repeats Mod installs a toggle switch for switching between “Infinite Repeats” mode and stock mode. This is a super cool mod for experimentalists that shines when used in conjunction with the Speed, Repeats, and Hi-Cut knobs to create intense soundscapes.

If you’d like to DIY, I’ve written a small write-up on applying the Infinite Repeats Mod.

How to tell which Dan-Echo version you have

To find out which version Dan Echo you have all you need to do is open the back panel to expose the circuit board. The versions that are compatible with Stompbox Electronics mods have the PT2395 chip, shown below.

When you open the pedal, the chip is facing away from your view. The circuit board will look similar to the image below. If you are unsure, take a picture and ask for clarification before purchasing the mod.
