MXR Flanger Modifications
The MXR Flanger was originally released in 1978 with an AC power cord attached to it and no indicator LED. The pedal was popularized by the likes of Eddie Van Halen – so much so that MXR decided to come out with the signature EVH117 (Black & White version) and the EVH117SE (Red, Black & White version).
The original circuit takes in 120VAC from the wall and converts it to 15VDC, allowing for substantial headroom. MXR later adapted to the demands of the market in the 117R version. They ditched the power cable for a standard power adapter plug – this time requiring 18VDC – and added an indicator LED.
The modifications below are specifically for the vintage MXR Flanger 117 for upgrading them to the 117R:
- Synergy Mod
- LED Mod
Some have noted a perceived volume drop from the MXR 117 and 117R Flangers. I also provide a modification to alleviate the volume drop.
If the mods below aren’t what you’re looking for, you can always request a custom modification through the Custom Guitar Pedal Modification Request form.
Baseline Mod
Synergy Mod
The Synergy Mod replaces the AC power cord with a negative-tip 18VDC barrel jack found commonly in pedals today. After this modification you will be able to energize your vintage MXR Flanger with an 18VDC power source, effectively synergizing your pedalboard.
LED Mod
Add an indicator light and a new true bypass switch to your vintage MXR Flanger! When you are performing there’s no time to second guess whether your gear is engaged.
Volume Drop Mod
This modification installs an op amp boost circuit to the output of the MXR Flanger. A level control for adjusting the amount of boost is added, ranging from 0dB to +3dB of boost, offering just enough to alleviate any perceived volume drop.
If you’d rather DIY it, I’ve written an article on the Volume Drop mod here. I also sell an Op Amp Boost modification board, which can be used in this particular mod. Disclaimers apply.
Common Accessories with MXR Flanger Modifications
Isolated Power Supplies
There are plenty of power supply units that carry 18VDC as an option. My recommendation is the Voodoo Labs ISO 5 for small pedalboards, and an MXR ISO Brick for medium-sized pedalboards.
